The gastronomic tradition of the family Matjaž begins when Jože Matjaž opened, in 1908, the Restaurant Pri Kočerju (Gostilna Pri Kočerju) in Mozirje. Life led the family Matjaž, through the Croatian city of Bakar, to Portoroz where, in 1978, Mate Matjaž opened the restaurant Tomi. Today, the restaurant Tomi is part of the prestigious trademark Gostilna Slovenije and is known for its exceptional cuisine that originates from the local and regional traditions. Close to restaurant Tomi were also constructed Tomi Hotel, Villa Fiesa, Villa Strunjan and Apartments Rab. All made with love and the personal commitment of the whole family Matjaž.
Situated on a hill above Portorož and surrounded by Mediterranean flora, it offers an exceptional view of the bay beneath stretching right to Croatia. In 2011, the restaurant Tomi successfully met the extremely demanding criteria of the national assessment board and was admitted in the prestigious group of “Gostilna Slovenija” brand, which is based on authentic, quality and traditional Slovene cuisine.
Their dishes of local and regional origin mostly consist of sea food and meat specialities. The restaurant is especially known for its oven-baked fish, scallops, shrimps on rocket, Refosco pasta with truffles and crab, stuffed gnocchi in a shrimp sauce, octopus, and some quite old and almost forgotten dishes, such as polenta with cod. These are just a few dishes which were created in order to merge local and traditional cuisine with modern trends and flavours of the Mediterranean. Only the best ingredients are used in the kitchen, such as locally produced vegetables, four different sorts of olive oil, and excellent Slovene wines produced in the region. The menu is adjusted according to a season and available fresh products from the sea and Istrian hinterland.

Villa Strunjan, rising above the bay of Strunjan, is a typical Istrian house, extensively refurbished, with a well preserved few-hundred-year old historical features and surrounded by Mediterranean flora, vineyards and olive-tree plantations.
